There are many different things that cause hair loss, and no matter how much we try to say that appearances don’t matter, people notice this trait in a person. Excessive hair loss leads to balding, which may cause serious stress and low self esteem for some people. Many people simply choose to shave their heads completely when they begin to suffer severe hair loss, but many others decide to be proactive and seek treatment.

Many studies have been completed on the causes of hair loss, as well as the psychological effects of baldness in men and women. There are certain events in a person’s life that can cause abnormal rates of hair loss, including lengthy illnesses, major surgeries, mental stress or traumatic experiences. Some other factors that are totally preventable can also cause hair loss, such as diet, drug/alcohol use and certain medications.

For men in most cases, excessive hair loss in certain areas of the head is a result of family history and hereditary traits. This is also sometimes true for women, but females may also experience hair loss that is known as traction alopecia as a result of wearing pig tails, cornrows or a tight hair roll. This kind of hair loss can be easily be remedied, though, by finding out and avoiding the “culprit.” After the cause of the traction alopecia hair loss is figured out and stopped, the hair will begin to grow back.

Hormone imbalance may sometimes result in excessive hair loss, as well, which can be cured by undertaking treatment. In many cases, however, the only way to combat hair loss is with surgery.
